Betawi Cultural Village Profile

The Betawi Cultural Village is an area in South Jakarta that is made up of a community that nurtures their culture that includes both the physical and non physical arts, such as: arts, customs (traditions), folklores, literature, cuisine and architecture, all of which are characterized by the Betawi culture.
The Betawi Cultural Village is located in the Srengseng Sawah Subdistrict of Jagakarsa in the South Jakarta City Administration. The area is made up of 289 hectares of land that is bordered Jl. Mochammad Kahfi II to Jl. Desa Putra (Jl. H. Pangkat) to the north, Jl. Desa Putra (Jl. H. Pangkat), Jl. Pratama (Wika, Jl. Mangga bolong timur) Jl. Lapangan merah to the east, the City of Depok to the south, and Jl. Mochammad Kahfi II to the west. The area is a true portrayal of the Betawi community. Various activities, typical of the Betawi culture, could be found there, including: the Pencak Silat martial arts, the ngederes, aqiqah and injek tanah ceremonies, the bridal and circumcision processions, as well as other activities such as trade and fresh water fishing. The area is also well known for its traditional Betawi cuisines, which includes, the Sayur Asem (Sour Vegetable Soup), Sayur Lodeh (Vegetable Soup with Coconut Milk), Soto Mie (Noodle Soup), Soto Babat (Triple Soup), Laksa, Kerak Telor (Crusted Fried Eggs), Toge Goreng (Fried Bean Sprouts), and such desserts as the Dodol (Taffies), Tape Uli (Fermented Rice and Rice Cake) and the Wajik (Sweet Glutinous Rice Cake). The typical Betawi drinks, such as the Bir Pletok (Herbal Beer) and Starfruit Juice could also be found here.
Well known for its cultural, agro water tourism activities, the Betawi Cultural Village is set amidst a natural sorrounding that are in contrast to the hustle and bustle of the Jakarta metropolis. The area also boasts two fresh water ponds, known to the locals as Setu Babakan and Setu Mangga Bolong. The two ponds are surrounded by lush green fruit trees specific to the area, sush as the Kecapi, Star Fruit, Rambutan, Melinjo, Papaya, Banana, Guava and Jackfriut trees. These trees are not only found within the recreational site, but could also be found growing in the people’s yard and have become an interesting attraction for the domestic as well as international tourists.

Tourism Potential
The Betawi Cultural Village has become the primary recreational destination for both local and international tourist, as it is the only place in Jakarta where visitors can enjoy three main activities (cultural, agro and water tourism) in one single stop. To spend a day in the Betawi Cultural Village is like stepping into another world. Here, visitors will be greeted by the friendliness of the Betawi people, can take part in the traditional activities and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The homely atmosphere is also suitable for the long staying visitors (for research purposes or to take part in the art and cultural trainings and education), as the area is also complemented by a 67 rooms home-stay facilities.

1.    Cultural Tourism
Cultural tourism is an activity that aims to reinvigotare the traditional values within a presentable, marketable and attractive package. The cultural tourism that can be enjoyed are:
·         Traditional music, arts, dance, and theater performances.
·         Traditional dance, music , theater for childern and adolescents.
The traditional Betawi procession that includes, wedding, circumcision, aqiqah, khatam Quran (completion of the reading of the holy Quran), tujuh bulanan (celebration of the third trisemester of pregnancy), injek tanah (a baby’s first step), ngederes, etc.
·         The Pencak Silat Betawi martial arts that are performed every Friday nights.
Domestic industrial output; souvenirs, bir pletok, starfruit juice, kerak telor, laksa, toge goreng, gado-gado, soto, halibut, sayur asem, nasi begane, nasi ulam, dodol, geplak, wajik rangi, rengginang, tape uli, lapis talam, onde, etc.

Water tourism are activities that aim to attract visitors through water sports. The two fresh water ponds (Setu Babakan dan Setu Mangga Bolong, that are located in the heart of the Betawi Cultural Village have attracted great interests among the visitors and is expected to become a promising tourist attraction, as visitors enjoy such activities as water-bikes,
3.    Agro Tourism
Agro-tourism is a form of tourism that take advantage of the farming activities (* agro) as a tourist attraction. The main purpose of such activities is to enrich the visitors’ experience and provide business opportunities in the field of agri culture. The charm and uniqueness of the agrotourism in the Betawi Cultural Village is that the agricultural areas are not located in a separately designated area but are found in the yards of the houses so that during the harvesting season, when the fruits are ripe, visitors will be tempted to by the peoples homes. The owners of the homes will warmly greet the visitors by presenting them with the recently harvested fruits as a sign of respect.
